Most estate plans name one executor to handle everything. What a digital executor actually does
- Locates and accesses digital accounts using the authority granted in the estate plan
- Follows the deceased’s documented wishes for each account — close, transfer, memorialize, or preserve
- Handles technical recovery processes (crypto wallets, two-factor authentication, platform-specific request forms)
- Coordinates with the general executor so nothing falls through the cracks between “digital” and “traditional” assets
Who makes a good fit
This doesn’t need to be a separate legal role in every case — for many families, the same person can serve both functions. But it’s worth deliberately choosing someone comfortable with technology, rather than defaulting to whoever is named executor by tradition (the eldest child, a spouse) if that person has never set up two-factor authentication in their life.
Making it official
A digital executor’s authority still needs to come from the estate planning documents themselves — naming someone informally isn’t enough if the will or trust doesn’t grant them explicit digital asset access under RUFADAA.
